National Stepfamily Awareness Day
The last Sunday in July has been designated as ‘National
Stepfamily Awareness Day’. A day dedicated to the stepfamily, it provides an
opportunity to acknowledge, promote and celebrate the great work that
stepfamilies do.
National Stepfamily Awareness Day could also be a great opportunity to organise
your own stepfamily get-together. Perhaps a barbeque at your home or local park.
Invite other stepfamilies, invite your family members.
Don’t miss this opportunity to honour your family and all the effort and hard
work it takes to make a stepfamily work. Watch this space for more information.
National Stepfamily Awareness Day
The third National Stepfamily Awareness Day is planned for Sunday
27th July 2008.
National Stepfamily Awareness Day is a project of Stepfamilies
Australia, the national stepfamily network. Together we are
developing a national voice for stepfamilies.
For too long, stepfamilies in Australia have been discounted, but
stepfamilies have lots to offer Australian society. They demonstrate
flexibility, respect, and ability to adjust creatively to change.
National Stepfamily Awareness Day offers stepfamilies a great
opportunity to honour their stepfamily and increase community
awareness of stepfamilies. Stepfamilies particularly need
opportunities to stop and celebrate, because they are formed out of
loss and face the challenge of developing new family relationships
‘on the run’.
National Stepfamily Awareness Day also invites the Australian
Government to
-
develop stepfamily-inclusive family policy
-
recognise that repartnering with children brings complex
unique challenges which often places family stability at risk, and
-
provide adequately funded, specialised prevention and early
intervention supports
All stepfamilies and supporters are invited to join in celebrating
National Stepfamily Awareness Day:
-
Organise your own get-together. For example - invite friends for
dinner; plan a picnic or barbeque in a local park.
-
Plan a family activity for your own stepfamily, doing something
you all enjoy.
