Bottle Feeding - Formulas and Drinks

BOTTLE FEEDING 1 - formulas and drinks

Important note:
Bottle feeding is divided into two topics. "Bottle Feeding 1" - which is about what to put in the bottle, and BOTTLE FEEDING 2 - giving bottle feeds. - which is about how to give bottle feeds.

Although breastfeeding is generally best for babies because breast milk is especially made for their needs, babies can also do  well if they need to be bottle fed. Formulas are modified to be as close to breastmilk as possible, although there are still a lot of extras in breastmilk that cannot be put into formulas.

ALERT!
It is important that formula is made up exactly as it says on the can. Different formulas may use different size scoops and are mixed with different amounts of water.

Bottle feeding - safety issues. (Better Health Channel)
Bottle-feeding equipment can harbour disease-causing bacteria if not properly handled, cleaned and sterilised. Other potential hazards include incorrectly prepared formula and overheating the milk.

Bottle feeding with expressed breast milk. (Better Health Channel)
It is quite common for mothers to bottle feed their baby using their expressed breast milk. Breast milk can be expressed by hand, or with a manual or electric breast pump. Breast milk must be collected and stored properly to prevent bacteria developing.

Bottle feeding with formula. (Better Health Channel)
If you choose to bottle feed your baby with formula, you will need bottles with caps and teats, infant formula and sterilising equipment. Formula milk is the alternative choice to breast milk and, providing the equipment is cleaned well and the formula is prepared correctly, your baby should do well.

If breastfeeding is not possible, you may wean your baby on to a milk formula. Discuss this with your nurse. If you have any concerns about your baby's reaction to either breast or bottle milk, seek advice before weaning or altering the formula.
