A hordeolum, also known as an eye stye, is an inflammation of part of the eyelash. A stye, medically known as a hordeolum,
is a small lump that appears on, inside or under the eyelid or on
eyelashes. Hordeolum (Stye) is described as a red, painful, swollen,
cyst-like bump of the eyelid caused by a localized inflammatory
process. Inflammation of an eyelash follicle with a lump called a sty
or hordeolum is usually caused by staph.
A hordeolum is an acute, localized, pyogenic (usually
staphylococcal) infection or abscess of the eyelid that may be external
(stye) or internal. A stye (sometimes called a hordeolum) is an
infected root of an eyelash. A hordeolum, also known as a stye, is an
inflammation of the eyelid margin.
Place a fomentation of mullein leaves, red raspberry leaves, golden
seal, slippery elm, lobelia and marshmallow root over the eye. A stye
looks like a small, red bump either on the eyelid or on the edge of the
eyelid. These include conjunctivitis, red eye, dry eye and styes. In
some cases of staph blepharitis, a red eye may develop or a sty may
form. The stye is often limited to the lid without causing a red eye.
Occasionally, a stye
does not heal completely and leaves behind a firm, red, cystic lump in
the eyelid. The stye will look like a red bump at the base of an
eyelash and will be tender. Because the tissues of the eye become
inflamed (red, painful swelling) from the infection, the stye takes on
the appearance of a small pimple.
Symptoms of an Eye Sty: a red, hot, tender, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful swelling near the edge of the eyelid. An eye stye
usually starts as a sensitive, red, swollen area on the edge of the
eyelid at the base of an eyelash. When a sty develops, a small area of
the upper or lower eyelid or the corner of the eye becomes red, tender
and swollen.
