Step-parents uniteFrom Cinderella to Hansel and Gretel and Sleeping Beauty, step-parenting gets a pretty bad rap.

Gepetto has better press despite the alarming antics of his wayward offspring, but then it's always assumed Pinocchio is a chip off the old woodcarver.

Odd, really, when Gepetto always looks decidedly fleshy to his son's obvious woodenness. And just where mum is in all of this is anyone's guess.

For whatever reason, Gepetto is fortunate. He escapes the step-parent label and has a reputation as a good and loving father.

In real life, as well as in storyland, others are not so lucky. Perhaps it's because from our earliest years bedtime tales have warped our minds, but the words "wicked" and "stepmother" seem super-glued together.

Now someone - actually a whole community - has decided to try to prise them apart.

The Waikato town of Tirau has declared Sunday, August 28, step-parent day.

Sheryn Clothier, stepmum to three boys aged 7 to 15 and chairwoman of the Tirau Business Association, explains why the town has taken the, err, step.

"Basically, we feel there are a lot of children today who feel torn on the traditional Mothers and Fathers Days and a lot of step-parents who contribute to blended families but are not recognised," she told me.

"We are saying, 'Come and say thanks and spend some time with your step'. Most of Tirau's 20 cafes will offer free coffee to step-parents accompanied by their stepchildren on that day."
