What
do you do when your stepdaughter calls you a boring, fat, ugly, old cow?
Does asking someone to help in the garden count as child abuse?
Who should have the best bedroom?
How do you tell your spouse about his/her child's bad behaviour?
Will it ever get better?
The Brady Bunch has a lot to answer for! As though stepfamilies don't have
enough problems without being compared with impossible ideals. And then
there are all those wicked stepmothers and fathers in the fairy tales - will
a 'yuk' at the dinner table end with you poisoning someone's apple?
Books about stepfamilies tend to extremes - either doom and gloom or
unrealistic sweetness and light. As they struggle through those first
difficult years, what most stepfamilies need is a book that faces the truth
of their situation but offers useful advice. This book does just that,
listing all the most-asked questions that stepfamilies grapple with, and
offering practical solutions.
Secrets of Successful Stepfamilies gives stepfamilies what they need most -
hope! Sue Hart-Byers knows what it is like. She is a stepmother herself, and
freely admits that she made many mistakes in the early days, but she was
determined to do better, and eventually she did. A secondary teacher and
social historian, she has entertained readers of the Eastern Suburbs
Reporter in Perth for the past year with her humorous column recounting the
antics of her new family of seven. Now she shares those experiences with a
wider audience.
Must admit I have not completely finished the book but what I have read to
date I have enjoyed. Sue Hart-Byers is writing from her own experiences
stating what has worked for her. It is written in a very casual manner, a
book that is easily read and at times quite funny. If you want to read about
the experience of a stepmother could be worth looking for. I paid $19.95 for
the book.
