Three quarters of those same people eventually remarry, and about 65 percent of those remarriages involve children from a prior marriage. Thus, more than half of all second marriages taking place in our country create a new type of family: a stepfamily. Estimating the actual number of stepfamilies in our country today, however, is difficult; the U.S. Census Bureau has not calculated them since the early nineties.
