Children put at risk by asthma medication

Thousands of children put at risk by asthma medication

Asthma experts fear thousands of Australian children are using unnecessary and potentially dangerous asthma medications, and are calling for a review of the alarming frequency with which the drugs are prescribed.

The drugs, called long-acting beta2 agonists, can be taken by themselves but are commonly found in combination puffers such as Seretide and Symbicort.

The head of the department of respiratory medicine at the Children's Hospital at Westmead and a professor of paediatric respiratory medicine at the University of Sydney, Peter van Asperen, said there was little research showing they prevented asthma attacks in children.
