If you're the step-parent Print E-mail

Tread warily, go slowly and try to see things from their perspective.

Aim to be a great friend but no more. Remember, stepchildren have a biological mum who will always come first.

Never criticise their mum Find something positive to say about her and your stepchildren will relax.

Offer to help with homework.

Let the biological parent do all the disciplining at first.

Be fair and even-handed with privileges and discipline. Instead of trying to stop bad behaviour, find out reasons for it.

Have regular family days out. Communal outings can be icebreakers. Bowling, a football match or a park visit are all good choices.

Don't take difficult behaviour personally. Acknowledge you're both finding the situation difficult but you're doing your best.

Assert your authority as an adult rather than a parent figure by making house rules.
