 When
my Portland stepparents group gets together to cry, complain, boast and
laugh, the parents' stories reflect the very best and worst of
stepfamilies, which quickly are becoming the most common type of family
in the United States.
More than half of all Americans today
have been -- or eventually will be -- part of a stepfamily, and it's
estimated that about 90 million people in the United States are now
members of blended families.
Here's the bad news about the people
who make up the millions of stepfamilies in this country, news that
comes directly from my friends here in the Rose City: Many stepparents
struggle every day with ex-spouses who allow their bad memories,
resentment and anger to undermine the health and well-being of their
children.
