No
one has managed to write a 'script' for stepfamily life; as yet, there
are no agreed upon standards and procedures that can be consulted. In
some respects this places stepfamilies at a disadvantage. We typically
like to have a reasonably clear idea of what we should do and how we
might do it. A couple with no children will have preconceived notions
regarding courtship, engagement, and marriage, as will their families
and friends and society at large. This script does not have to be
adhered to rigidly; there is plenty of room for improvisation, but the
couple is likely to retain a general understanding of how their life
together will unfold. Members of stepfamilies do not have the benefit
of such guidelines. What is a stepfamily suppose to look like, and how
is it supposed to function? Is it a unit headed by a biological parent
and stepparent together or is the stepparent more peripheral? Will old
customs and habits be preserved or should they be replaced by new ones
in order to strengthen the stepfamily's identity.
